Leipzig is the largest city in the German state of Saxony. With a population of more than 600,000, the city has an area covering 297.36 square km. Since the Holy Roman Empire, Leipzig has been a city of trade. It played a major part in the downfall of communism in Europe in the 1990s, with several demonstrations starting from the city's St Nicholas Church.
The GfK marketing research institution has labelled Leipzig as the most livable city in all of Germany, ranking second in the future prospects amongst all cities in the country according to the Berenberg Bank. The German Federal Administrative Court has its seat in the city.
The Globalization and World Cities Research Network has listed Leipzig as a "Sufficiency" level global city and was awarded the European city of the year in 2019. The Leipzig Zoo is the best Zoo in the country and ranks second in all of Europe.
Automobile manufacturers such as BMW and Porsche have set up manufacturing plants in the northern part of the city. The Leipzig/Halle Airport is the hub of all air operation for DHL. The city has also earned the nickname "Boomtown of eastern Germany" and is sometimes known as "Hypezig".
